City of Leduc Strategic Plan
Strategic Planning Committee. City of Leduc Strategic Plan, today there was a follow up meeting for the Strategic Planning Committee, as they were discussing the progress of their plan from 2019-2022. The Strategic Plan is what the Municipality goes off of for what direction they are working and goals that they are working toward.
They create it a year after they are voted in and from what I have seen it is a working document that evolves and changes all the time. It is what they work off of to make us such an amazing and vibrant community.
Some of the amazing things that I took notice of today was:
The Engage Leduc.
Have you done your This is Our Leduc video. I have thought about it so many times, growing up here there have been so many memories and moments that happened to me around town. Most I have found too personal to share, but this event is a way to market our community to other citizens who want to move here.
I know they are doing a big push with the business community about why they have set up shop here in town, but haven’t had much of a push from the community. I know I am going to challenge myself to something this year. I hope you do too. I am so very proud of my city lets show it off.
The growth on the west side of town was all throughout the meeting.
From the west side community gardens to the Crystal Creek development. They mentioned the new high school as well.
There is no site plan secured for this yet, but I do know that they are hoping for a west end location as they are hoping to get the county students to go to that location versus the inner city one. I really find this one awesome cause if played right, where tax dollars are spent we as a public can leverage this for a faster potential increase in property values.
Closeness to schools is a big search engine for families and therefore homes with 2 or more bedrooms. Property values are based largely on basic laws of supply and demand. The more people that want it, the higher the valuation.
Did you know that the Leduc Golf Club has not transferred their land to the City of Leduc?
I know I have had many conversations with people on the idea that this land is a sore spot for the city. That they want to get rid of it for more development. Well, that is not true at all. They have started to make a bike path all around it and at the council meeting when it was approved to be transferred they were even talking about having a winter festival there.
Lastly is the accessibility of the civic facilities and strengthening the neighborhood connections.
As of now they are giving seniors free access during lull periods in the afternoon and according to this it stated that they are going to “implement new youth wellness initiative and access opportunities – youth 0-17 summer access during non peak times. I think that is amazing, just as the sun is scorching or the afternoons where it is raining, like last summer.
It’s a chance to go out and get out. Our slogan used to be a living city with the right connections. Staying fit and being active is a big driver for our community. Another point that I think is worth mentioning is the neighborhood block parties. I remember reading on Facebook that it was very hard to get the permits, well that was brought up and the city is working on it.
They want us to keep our community feel and the strength in our relationship with our neighbor, as we are growing and more people move in the more we need to stay connected to each other. Todd Hirst even mentioned the power of mental health and how it is going to be a big economic driver in the future with absences from work, cost on health benefits and all prescriptions.
The more we rely on social media for our connection the more we will rely on others. So having these as something that we are strategically planning for is so important for us as a community.
There is a few other things that were worth the attention and that is the Lean Budgeting Reserve, which I will talk about next week, and the Arts and Culture. I do believe that Arts is a big piece of Culture but it needs to be much broader than that and I will discuss that as well moving forward.
If there is anything that interests you or that you would like to hear about or get more information on, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I truly love my city and I want to see it grow to be the best community out there! #CityofLeducStrategicPlan
See you next Thursday.
